Power and Awesomeness of God’s Creation

Reflection for the 12th Sunday of Ordinary Time by Sr. Maryann Mueller, CSSF

This reflection was originally posted in our June 15th Newsletter

It is fitting that on this day of the summer solstice our liturgical readings give us an opportunity to focus on the power and awesomeness of God’s creation. In the first reading both Job and we are assured that the creator who set limits on the ocean will always remain beside us in the stormy times of our lives. “I set limits for it and fastened the bar of its door, and said: Thus far shall you come but no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stilled!” (Job 38: 10-12) This message is echoed by the psalmist and in today’s Gospel by Saint Mark.

As the sun appears to stand still in the sky, and those who live in the Northern Hemisphere enjoy the longest amount of daylight for the year, we are reminded of how dependent we are on the sun and on all of God’s creation for our life on earth. Saint Bonaventure wrote that each creature spoke to Saint Francis of God. All of creation is sanctified because of the Incarnation. What then are we called to do when creatures become extinct each day because human beings abuse and misuse God’s gift of creation?

Reverence of creation is at the heart of all major religious traditions. In the past few months, GreenFaith has held webinars featuring environmental leaders of various global faith traditions. Prayer resources and information on the stances taken by the major global religions to protect God’s creation may be found on the GreenFaith website.

As people worldwide study Pope Francis’ encyclical on God’s creation, we are becoming more aware that we will never have peace on Earth unless we are at peace with the Earth. On this day when we witness, and our liturgical readings speak of, the awesomeness of creation, let us each vow, in the words of GreenFaith, to “make my life a blessing for the Earth.”
