Shine Like a Star!

Reflection for the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time by Sr. Marie Lucey

Who desires to shine like a star forever? Me, God! Then you must do justice now. (Dan. 12:3)

As the liturgical calendar moves to the close of Ordinary Time, 2015, and the beginning of Advent, season of hope, we are first faced with reflection on the End Time. The readings both frighten and comfort. Jesus tells his disciples (then and now), “the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers in heaven will be shaken.” (Mk 13: 24-25) As if these events are not alarming enough, they follow tribulation. We may beg that these terrors not happen in our lifetime. Or we may wonder if we are now in the midst of the great tribulation: atrocities of wars, wave after wave of desperate refugees, terrorist attacks, gun violence, human slavery, mighty storms and severe droughts. “But of that day and hour, no one knows,” not even himself, says Jesus. While it’s true that the tribulations of our time are global in magnitude and threaten Earth herself, previous generations have experienced horrors of war, genocide, famine, plagues, slavery, oppression-and survived.
Jesus assures his disciples that at some unknown time the “Son of Man” will come “with great power and glory” and will send angels to “gather his elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of the sky.” (MK 13:26-27) He also promises that his words will not pass away. So, when the end time comes is not ours to know, but what is ours to do now is to live the good news and pass on the words of Jesus. It is up to us to “lead the many to justice.” Then we shall be “like the stars forever.”

When today’s tribulations threaten to overwhelm us, we might pray with the trust of the psalmist: “You will show me the path to life, fullness of joys in your presence…forever.”
